How do we set goals for ourselves? One proven method is SMART goals…
SMART goals stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time Bound
Specific:
State your goal(s) in a specific format. If you want to loose weight, determine how much you want to loose. If you wanto get to the top in business then define what the top means, e.g. CEO of your current company, business person of the year, best selling author, you name it, but be specific because “if you don’t know where you want to go no road will take you there.”
Measurable:
For some goals measuring your progress is easier then others. Making sure you can measure your success is a very important motivator for your continued strive for success. Especially for a goal like being the “CEO of your current company” you may need to implement some sub goals that, in your mind, will lead to your end goal. In this case you can use these sub goals as measurable outcomes towards your end goal. Measurable goals will enable you to answer the question “How much of my goal have a I reached?” or “How close am I to my end goal?”.
Achievable:
Setting achievable goals is all about the balance between goals that are too easy and too hard. Goals that are too easy do not challenge to go the extra mile in order to reach your full potential. On the other hand, goals that are too difficult to reach will seam unattainable may make you feel anxious and overwhelmed. So take careful consideration and ask yourself if you think you can reach the goal you have set in your mind. Usually by thinking about the attainability of your goals, you automatically think aboutthe subgoals you need to achieve in order to reach it. Take note of these as this wil help you along the line.
Realistic:
Although it is good to have dreams, make sure you keeo it real. You may dream of being the Prime Minister one day. However, you may want to keep that goal in the back of your mind and firstly focus on a more realistic end goal, like winning your electorate seat. Again, make sure you strike a good balance between challenging yet realistic.
Time bound:
Set a date on when you want to achieve your goals. Again, this ties in with being able to measure your success toward the goal, and will also give you a certain sence of urgency which will give you a greater chance of success. Have you ever realised that you normally get a lot more tasks done when you are busy then when you have more time. The sence of time precious (even if this is preceived) will naturally make us prioritise our activities. By setting the time of when you want to achieve your goals, you are better equipped to measure your success along the way.
